RDAP rather than classic WHOIS
This uses RDAP, the Registration Data Access Protocol, rather than the original port-43 WHOIS service. RDAP returns structured JSON over HTTPS instead of free text that differed between every registry, which makes it far more reliable to parse and much easier to use from restricted networks.
The information is the same registration data. The delivery is simply modern.
Reading the dates
The creation date is when the domain was first registered, and it is one of the more useful signals available about a domain. A domain registered a week ago that claims to be an established business is worth scepticism -- domain age is routinely used in fraud and spam scoring for exactly this reason.
The expiry date matters operationally. A lapsed registration takes down the website and email together, and the domain can eventually be bought by someone else. Auto-renewal plus a monitored billing contact prevents the most avoidable outage there is.
Status codes worth recognising
clientTransferProhibited, clientUpdateProhibited and clientDeleteProhibited are registrar locks, and seeing them is good news. They prevent a domain being transferred, altered or deleted without first being unlocked, which is basic protection against hijacking.
Status codes beginning pending, such as pendingDelete or redemptionPeriod, mean the domain is in the process of expiring. A domain in redemption can usually still be recovered by its owner, though registrars charge a significant fee.
Checks worth running before you take a domain on
Inheriting a domain from a previous owner, an agency or a departing colleague is where registration data earns its keep, because the problems it surfaces are the expensive kind to discover later.
Look at the expiry date first and note how much runway you have. Then read the status codes: a domain without clientTransferProhibited can be moved by anyone who obtains the auth code, and one already sitting in a pending state may cost a redemption fee before it can be touched at all. Compare the nameservers on record against the DNS provider you were told is authoritative -- when they disagree, the zone you have been given access to is not the one answering queries, and edits there will appear to do nothing.
Finally, check that the registrar account itself is under your control rather than the previous holder's, and that the contact address on file is a mailbox your team actually reads. Renewal notices and transfer approvals go to that address, and a domain lost to an unread reminder is lost in the most preventable way possible.
Frequently asked questions
Why are the registrant's details missing?
Privacy regulation and registrar privacy services redact them by default. This is normal for the overwhelming majority of domains and does not indicate anything suspicious.
Can I look up an IP address here too?
Yes. For an address the tool queries the regional internet registry and returns the network block, the organisation it is allocated to, and the country.
What does a very recent creation date suggest?
On its own, nothing -- new domains are registered constantly. In combination with unsolicited contact or a payment request, a domain registered days ago is a meaningful warning sign.
Is a domain available if the lookup returns nothing?
Possibly, but check with a registrar rather than relying on this. Some registries rate-limit or restrict RDAP, and an empty result can reflect that rather than availability.
The nameservers here differ from my DNS provider. Which is right?
The ones shown here are authoritative: they are what the registry hands out, so they are what resolvers follow. If your provider's panel disagrees, records edited there are not the ones being answered, and the nameservers need correcting at the registrar.
How long before expiry should I renew?
Well before the date, and not on the date. A domain that lapses stops resolving immediately -- website and mail together -- and recovering one that has entered redemption usually costs considerably more than the renewal would have.
