What this address represents

The address shown is the one your traffic appeared to come from when it reached this server. For most home and office connections it belongs to your router, not your computer: everything behind the router shares one public address through network address translation.

That means the address identifies your connection to the internet, not your device. Every device in your house typically shows the same one.

Why it changes

Most residential connections use dynamic addressing, where the provider assigns an address from a pool and may change it when the router reconnects. Business lines often include a static address precisely because services that must be reachable, or allowlisted by a partner, need one that does not move.

If you are on mobile data, the address may belong to a carrier-grade NAT pool shared by many subscribers, and it can change as you move between cells.

The proxy chain

When a request passes through proxies or a load balancer, each can append the address it received the request from to the X-Forwarded-For header. The leftmost entry is the original client and the rest are intermediaries.

This is worth understanding if you run servers, because it determines how you log and rate-limit correctly. An application that reads the connecting address without accounting for a proxy in front of it will see every request as coming from the load balancer.

What your address does and does not reveal

It reveals your internet provider and your approximate location -- usually the city or region, based on public registry data. That is how sites offer local content and currency.

It does not reveal your name, address or identity. Your provider holds the records linking an address to an account and, absent a legal request, does not publish them. A VPN replaces the address others see with the VPN provider's, which moves that trust to the VPN operator rather than eliminating it.

Why does this differ from what my router shows?

Your router displays its private address on your local network, typically starting 192.168 or 10. This page shows the public address the outside world sees, which is a different thing entirely.

Can I stop websites seeing my IP address?

Not while browsing normally -- a server needs a return address to send you a reply. A VPN or proxy substitutes theirs for yours, which hides it from the site but reveals it to the VPN provider.

Why do I have both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses?

Many connections run both, and which one is used depends on what the destination supports. This page shows whichever protocol your browser used to reach it.

Is a private address shown here a problem?
